The disc separator is a vertical separator. The drum is installed on the upper end of the vertical shaft and is driven by an electric motor through a transmission device to rotate at high speed. There is a group of disc-shaped parts stacked together in the drum - discs. There is a small gap between the discs. The discs are conical, and their semi-cone angle is greater than the friction angle between the solid particles and the disc surface, generally 30°~45°, and the number of discs is 50~180; the disc gap is 0.5~2 mm. The suspension is added to the drum through the feed pipe located in the center of the drum. When the suspension passes through the gap between the discs, the solid particles settle on the discs under the action of the centrifuge to form sediment. The sediment slides along the surface of the disc and detaches from the disc and accumulates in the largest diameter part of the drum. The separated clear liquid is discharged from the drum from the liquid outlet. The function of the disc is to shorten the sedimentation distance of the solid particles and expand the sedimentation area of the drum. The installation of discs in the drum greatly improves the production capacity of the separator. The solids accumulated in the drum are automatically discharged by PLC control (the discharge time can be adjusted). The disc separator is suitable for processing suspensions and emulsions with solid particle diameters of 0.001 to 0.5 mm, solid-liquid density difference greater than 0.01 kg/dm, and solid concentration less than 5%. The disc separator is widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, light industry, food, biodiesel, petroleum and transportation sectors due to its compact structure, small footprint and large production capacity.

When three-phase separation of liquid and solid occurs, the mixed liquid enters the gap between the discs through the feed hole on the disc bundle, and is divided into heavy liquid and light liquid according to different densities. The heavy liquid flows along the inner surface of the disc to the drum wall, and the light liquid flows to the center, and is discharged through the overflow port and the centripetal pump respectively. The feed hole should be located at the junction of the heavy liquid layer and the light liquid layer. This is called the neutral layer, and its radius, where k is the density ratio of the heavy liquid to the light liquid, R1 and R2 are the discharge outlet radii of the heavy liquid and the light liquid, respectively. When the feed hole does not coincide with the neutral layer, the discharged heavy liquid or light liquid is not pure. At this time, the discharge outlet radius of the heavy liquid or light liquid can be changed to adjust the position of the neutral layer. Since the liquid in the drum is divided into many thin layers by the disc bundle, the separation is carried out in the thin layer, and the centrifugal sedimentation distance is very short, which significantly improves the separation speed. The separation factor of the disc separator is relatively high, reaching 4000 to 12000, and due to the large number of discs in the drum, the sedimentation area is significantly expanded, and the separation efficiency is relatively high.

Working principle:

The drum rotates at high speed, and the material enters the drum continuously from the feed pipe. Under the action of the centrifugal field. The heavier solid phase is deposited on the drum wall to form a sediment layer and remains in the drum. The lighter liquid phase forms an inner liquid ring, which continuously overflows from the drum from the overflow port at the upper end of the drum, and the overflowed liquid is discharged through the liquid outlet.
